July is one of my favorite times of year in Colorado. The farmers markets are overflowing with juicy ripe peaches, vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh herbs, leafy greens, and berries so sweet they barely make it home before being eaten.
There’s something about this season that naturally pulls us back into rhythm with simpler living. More time outdoors. More gatherings with friends and family. More meals that don’t need to be complicated to feel nourishing.
A few summers ago, I remember walking through a local farmers market on a similar July morning. I wasn’t there for anything elaborate just fresh produce for the week. But what stayed with me wasn’t just what I bought. It was the feeling of connection. Neighbors chatting, farmers sharing stories about the soil and the weather, children sampling fruit, and everyone moving a little slower.
It reminded me that wellness doesn’t have to be something we chase. Sometimes it’s something we return to.
That idea is at the heart of the Blue Zones.
The Blue Zones are regions of the world where people live significantly longer, healthier lives. Researchers studying these communities identified nine shared lifestyle habits known as the Power 9®. What stands out most is how simple they are and how closely they mirror what we see when life is lived in season, connected to nature, and grounded in community.
Move Naturally
In Blue Zones, movement isn’t scheduled, it’s built into daily life. People walk, garden, cook, and live in ways that keep their bodies naturally active.
July makes this even easier. Take advantage of longer daylight hours with evening walks, time in the garden, hikes, or simply being outside more often.
Eat More Plants (Especially Seasonal Ones)
One of the most powerful connections between Blue Zones living and summer in Colorado is the food itself.
This is the season of abundance tomatoes bursting with flavor, zucchini from backyard gardens, cucumbers, fresh herbs, berries, and stone fruits like peaches and plums. Eating locally grown, seasonal food doesn’t just taste better, it reconnects us to where our food comes from.
Plant-forward eating isn’t about restriction. It’s about abundance and color.
Slow Down
There’s a natural invitation in summer to slow down and enjoy long evenings, outdoor meals, and unhurried conversations.
Blue Zones communities prioritize this rhythm of pause and presence. In our own lives, this might look like sitting outside with a cup of tea, turning off distractions at mealtime, or simply breathing more intentionally between commitments.
Find Your Purpose
Many people in Blue Zones have a clear sense of purpose that carries them through each day.
Purpose doesn’t have to be big or complicated. It might be caring for family, tending a garden, serving others, or creating something meaningful in your work or home life.
Enjoy Food with Intention
Meals in Blue Zones are often social, shared, and unrushed.
Summer makes this easier by grilling outside, sharing meals on patios, or gathering with friends and family. Food becomes an experience, not just fuel.
Build Connection and Belonging
One of the strongest predictors of long-term health is connection.
And July naturally brings opportunities for it with neighborhood gatherings, family vacations, farmers markets, and outdoor events. These small moments of belonging matter more than we often realize.
Eat Mindfully (The 80% Rule)
Blue Zones residents often stop eating when they feel about 80% full meaning comfortable, not stuffed.
In the summer, when meals are lighter and more fresh, it becomes easier to listen to the body’s natural cues. Slowing down and noticing fullness is a practice in awareness, not restriction.
Put Loved Ones First
Some of the most meaningful wellness habits are also the simplest: shared meals, time together, and being present with the people who matter most.
Summer offers more space for these moments with picnics, barbecues, travel, and time outdoors together.
Create a Healthy Environment
What we surround ourselves with shapes our choices.
A kitchen filled with fresh, seasonal produce makes nourishing choices feel natural. A calendar with space for rest and connection supports better balance. Wellness is often less about discipline and more about design.
A July Wellness Challenge
This month, choose just one Blue Zones habit to focus on:
- Visit a local farmers market and cook one seasonal meal
- Take an evening walk after dinner
- Add one extra serving of vegetables to your day
- Share a meal outdoors with someone you love
- Pause for five minutes of stillness before or after meals
Small, consistent actions are what create lasting change.
Back to Basics
The more I work in wellness, the more I return to this truth: health doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes it looks like a walk at sunset.
Sometimes it looks like a plate full of summer vegetables.
Sometimes it looks like laughing around a table with people you love.
We believe wellness is not a luxury reserved for a few,
it’s a way of living rooted in simple daily choices that nourish the body, calm the mind, and strengthen connection.
The Blue Zones remind us that longevity isn’t built through extremes. It’s built through rhythm, relationships, and returning again and again to the basics.
And July, with all its color and warmth, is a beautiful place to begin.
